«Собачьи дни», пекло, самые жаркие дни лета. Это выражение происходит от латинского dies canulares, отсюда в английском языке выражение в том же значении canicular days. Dies canulares — дни, связанные с восходом Сириуса. Сириус, находящийся в созвездии Большого Пса, назывался Canicula (уменьшительное от canis — собака), по-английски the Dog Star. По древнеримскому поверью, восход Сириуса (в июле — августе) способствовал усилению жары. Выражение позднее стало также ассоциироваться с тем, что собаки бесятся в жаркую погоду.
